The refugees were escaping the ongoing war in Sudan, where fighting between the army and paramilitary groups has forced thousands to flee. Many try to pass through Libya, hoping to reach Europe, but the journey is very dangerous.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the boat suddenly burst into flames while at sea. Some reports from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said that 24 people survived, while others mentioned 13 survivors. They were given food, blankets, and medical care after being rescued.
Survivors described the chaos as the fire spread, forcing people to jump into the water. Some clung to pieces of wood, while others swam for hours before help arrived. Rescue teams from the Libyan coast guard and aid workers searched the waters but could not save many more lives.
This is not the first disaster this year. In June 2025, about 60 people went missing after two shipwrecks near Libya. In August, three young Sudanese sisters drowned when their dinghy capsized. So far this year, hundreds of migrants and refugees have died in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to reach safety in Europe.
The IOM has called for safer routes for people fleeing war and hardship, saying tragedies like this will continue if desperate families have no other choice.
