According to eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred on Wednesday following a minor dispute. The victim was accused of scratching Adio’s vehicle, a quarrel that quickly escalated into a brutal attack. Adio, reportedly joined by some of his colleagues, allegedly assaulted the rider until he collapsed.
A journalist, Chris Nwandu, who posted a video of the incident on social media, described Adio as notorious for violent behaviour in the area. He alleged that just days earlier, the suspect had beaten a tricycle (Marwa) operator so severely that the victim was hospitalised.
Police sources confirmed that the dispatch rider succumbed to his injuries shortly after the attack. “The victim died from the beating, and the suspect has since been arrested. He is currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID),” one officer said.
As of press time, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, was unavailable for official comment.
The tragic death has sparked outrage among residents and road users on Lagos Island, many of whom are calling for stricter action against violent NURTW members.
