The attack happened at about eight fifteen in the evening. Pastor Nasamu had stepped out briefly to pray for a sick church member when the gunmen broke into his house. His wife, who gave birth just three months ago and is still nursing her baby, was at home with her infant and the visitor. Neighbours later recalled seeing strange men on motorcycles moving around the area earlier in the day, but no one knew trouble was coming.
By the time the pastor rushed back home after receiving a shaky phone call from his wife, the house was empty. His wife and the church member had been whisked away by the armed men. Only the baby was left behind, crying helplessly. The child, still feeding on breast milk, now depends on relatives for care while the mother remains in captivity.
Family members said the kidnappers allowed a short phone call during which Mrs Nasamu was heard weeping bitterly. She cried for her baby and begged for help, saying she was weak and in pain. Relatives fear for her health as she is still recovering from childbirth and now has to endure long treks in the forest with little food or water.
On Monday, September twenty-third, the kidnappers demanded a ransom of fifty million naira for the release of the two women. This demand has left the family devastated as the pastor’s income comes mainly from his small church, Word of God Church in Agyaragu. The identity of the abducted church member has not been released, but sources confirmed she is also a mother.
Residents of Agyaragu described the attack as part of a wider wave of kidnappings that has gripped Nasarawa State. Just a week earlier, gunmen abducted a senior aide to the state governor, though he later regained freedom. Locals say they now live in fear, with no guarantee of safety even inside their homes.
Community leaders and church members have called on Governor Abdullahi Sule and security agencies to act fast and rescue the victims. Many villagers believe the forests around Agyaragu have become hiding places for criminal gangs who continue to terrorise the area.
The news of the abduction has spread across Nigeria, drawing sympathy and anger. People expressed shock that even a pastor’s family is not spared from kidnappers. Church groups in different towns have begun prayer vigils, asking God to bring the women back alive and safe. Medical workers have also raised concern that prolonged separation from her baby could damage Mrs Nasamu’s health and affect the child’s wellbeing.
As of now, security operatives say they are combing the forests in search of the captives. The family is appealing for public support while Pastor Nasamu continues to pray and hold his baby, waiting for the day his wife will return.
