The woman, who has been in a relationship with her 39-year-old lover for one year and moved in with him just three months ago, said she spends almost every day washing his shoes. According to her, her hands are peeling from constantly scrubbing because he insists on wearing only white shoes, even though he works at a construction company where dirt is unavoidable.
She explained that his company provides durable work shoes, but he refuses to wear them, saying he feels “comfortable” only in his white pairs. Even after she bought him black shoes, he abandoned them and continued buying new white ones, leaving her with the burden of cleaning.
“It’s not just the shoes,” she lamented. “My boyfriend will never lift a finger to help with chores. He cares for me and shows me love, but when it comes to housework, everything is on me. He says it is against his Igbo tradition for a man to do chores when he has a woman.”
The young woman admitted she has tried to reason with him, but he insists that culture supports his position. Despite her frustration, she says she loves him deeply and does not want to leave him.
“I’m scared,” she said. “I’m already 31, and the thought of losing him terrifies me. What if I leave and never find someone else? My friends are getting married and having babies. I don’t want to end up alone.”
Her cry has sparked debate online, with many people advising her to set boundaries and others urging her to be careful not to sacrifice her happiness in the name of love.
