A grieving Nigerian woman has shared her heartbreaking story of how her late husband’s siblings forced her out of her home only ten days after he died. The sad incident has left many people shocked and angry, as they wonder why some families still treat widows so unfairly.
The widow’s painful story was shared online by a user, @ChuksEricE, on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In the short video posted, the woman can be seen crying as she explains what happened to her.
She said her husband had been very sick for a long time, and they spent millions of naira trying to save his life. She explained that they used almost twelve point eight million naira on his treatment. Sadly, despite all their efforts and spending, her husband did not survive.
According to the woman, since her husband fell sick, none of his family members helped them in any way. She said she and her husband suffered alone and tried to handle his sickness by themselves. She also revealed that during the period of his sickness, the family had wanted to sell a piece of land, but she stood her ground and refused to let them sell it.
To her shock, just ten days after her husband’s burial, his siblings came to her house when she was not around. She had gone to buy some things and had also taken her young son to school. While she was away, she received a distressing phone call that the roof of her house had been removed and her belongings were being thrown outside.
Rushing back home, she found all her things scattered outside in the open, even as rain fell on them. In the video, she said through tears:
“Since my husband fell sick, no one helped him; we suffered. We spent a lot of money, almost twelve point eight million naira on his treatment. We did not sell the land. Ten days after his death, they removed everything from my house. I had gone to buy something and taken my son to school when I got the call. When I rushed home, I saw all my belongings outside.”
Many people who have seen the video online have expressed deep anger and sadness over the woman’s situation. Some people said they could not believe that such things still happen in this modern age, where widows should be protected and cared for, not treated as outcasts.
Some social media users are calling on the government, human rights groups, and traditional leaders to step in and ensure that this widow gets justice and is allowed to stay in her late husband’s house.
Others have also advised women to make sure they know their rights and to always speak up when they are being cheated or treated unfairly by their husband’s family members.
This incident has sparked a fresh debate about the way some families treat widows in Nigeria, especially in cases where the woman and her children are left with nothing after losing their breadwinner.
As at the time of this report, it is not yet clear if any local authorities have stepped in to help the woman or if anyone has been arrested for forcefully throwing her out of her home.
Many people are now sharing the video online to draw attention to her plight, hoping that kind-hearted Nigerians, the government, and rights groups will come together to help the widow and her child find safety, shelter, and justice.
No woman deserves to suffer this kind of pain after losing her husband. Every widow deserves love, care, and protection, not tears in the rain.
