The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has sparked fresh controversy with a bold statement that Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, will never become President of Nigeria.
Wike made this statement on Sunday, July 6, 2025, during a thanksgiving service held to celebrate the successful completion of new projects in Abuja. He said bluntly, “Peter Obi can never be president again; his time has passed.”
According to the former Rivers State governor, Obi has become bitter and inconsistent since his loss in the 2023 general elections. He accused Obi of now condemning the same democratic process that once brought him to power as a state governor.
“Now he says democracy is no longer working. But when he was governor of Anambra, democracy was working,” Wike said, suggesting that Obi’s criticisms of the system only started after he failed to win power at the national level.
Wike also hinted that his comment was not just a personal opinion but part of a broader understanding of the shifting political reality. He dismissed the ADC-backed coalition and opposition movements trying to regroup ahead of 2027, saying they lack the structure and consistency needed to challenge the ruling establishment.
His comments come at a time when the political climate in Nigeria is becoming more heated, with multiple defections, realignments, and early power plays as politicians begin to position themselves for the 2027 elections.
Wike, a strong political figure who once served under the PDP and now plays a key role in the APC-led federal government, has never hidden his views about opposition leaders. His latest remarks are seen as an attempt to further weaken the credibility of Peter Obi, who still enjoys wide support, especially among Nigerian youths and professionals.
Peter Obi has not officially responded to Wike’s comment, but many of his supporters have taken to social media to express outrage, describing Wike’s statement as arrogant and disrespectful.
Wike, known for his no-nonsense style and unfiltered public remarks, remains one of the most influential political figures in the current administration. Whether his words will affect Obi’s political ambitions remains to be seen, but the battle lines are clearly being drawn as the 2027 race gradually comes into focus.
