A Federal High Court in Abuja has made a big decision. On Wednesday, 2 July 2025, the court allowed Ali Bello, the nephew of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, to travel to the United Kingdom for medical treatment. Ali Bello is facing a court case for allegedly stealing N3 billion. He is the Chief of Staff to the current Kogi State Governor, Usman Ododo.
The judge, Justice Obiora Egwuatu, agreed to let Ali Bello go after his lawyer, Zakari Abbas, asked the court to release his travel documents. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which is fighting the case against him, did not argue against the request. The court also allowed another person in the case, Yakubu Adabenege, to travel to Saudi Arabia for the 2025 Hajj pilgrimage between 28 July and 27 August.
Ali Bello must return his passport to the court by 12 September, and Adabenege must return his by 30 August. The court will continue the trial on 13 and 14 October 2025.
However, there is no record of the court approving Yahaya Bello himself to travel abroad for medical treatment. Yahaya Bello, the former governor, asked the court on 27 June 2025 to let him go overseas for health reasons, saying he needed to see a heart doctor in the United Kingdom.
His lawyer, Joseph Daudu, told Justice Emeka Nwite that Bello had not left Nigeria in eight years and needed urgent medical care. But the EFCC strongly disagreed, saying Bello might run away and that he could get treatment in Nigeria, even at a hospital he built in Kogi State.
The EFCC also said Bello’s request was not proper because he filed the same request in another court, which is against the rules. The court has not yet decided on Yahaya Bello’s request.
The judge set 21 July 2025 to announce the decision. For now, only Ali Bello, his nephew, has been allowed to travel abroad for medical reasons.
This news comes as Nigeria faces other big issues, like the meeting between Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi in Abuja, which has people talking about the 2027 election, and the recent court case against former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika for giving contracts to his family. Nigerians are watching closely to see what happens next in these cases.
