A heartbreaking incident has just been reported in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where a newborn baby was found dumped inside a bush, triggering shock and sorrow in the community.
According to eyewitnesses, the crying sound of the baby attracted the attention of some passersby who were walking along a quiet path earlier today. On getting closer, they discovered the baby, freshly delivered, wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in the bush.
Locals believe the baby may have been dumped shortly after birth by a female university student who reportedly stays nearby. The identity of the student is yet to be confirmed, but sources say she may have secretly delivered the baby and disposed of it to avoid shame or exposure.
Residents, filled with both anger and pity, quickly rescued the baby and rushed the child to a nearby clinic for urgent care. Luckily, the baby — who is said to be a girl — is alive and responding to treatment.
Many people in the area could not hold back tears. Some were seen praying over the baby, while others called for the suspected mother to be found and brought to justice.
“This is heartless. If she could not take care of the child, she could have handed the baby to someone instead of dumping an innocent soul like this in the bush,” one resident lamented.
Local authorities and security agencies in the area have been informed, and investigation is already ongoing to track down the person responsible.
This sad story has once again raised concerns about the mental health and emotional struggles of young women, especially students, who find themselves pregnant without support. While many are condemning the act, others are asking the government and schools to create more support systems for girls in such situations.
