There is mourning in Aba, Abia State, as a 17-year-old boy, Divine Odide, tragically drowned in the swimming pool of Merryhomes Hotel, located in the Ogbo Hill area of the city.
The heartbreaking incident happened during the second week of June 2025 while Divine was reportedly swimming with fellow students. His sudden death has left his family and the entire community in shock and pain.
Father Demands Justice
Speaking in Umuahia on Wednesday, Divine’s father, Mr Orji Odide, called for a full investigation to uncover what truly happened to his son. He accused the hotel management of trying to cover up the case and appealed to the Abia State Government to step in and ensure justice is served.
“I want the truth about my son’s death to come out. I don’t want his death to be swept under the carpet. We need answers,” Mr Odide said tearfully.
Hotel Reacts to Allegations
In response, the management of Merryhomes Hotel described the incident as “unfortunate and mysterious.” In a statement, the hotel denied claims of covering up the matter and said it is cooperating fully with the police. The management added that the hotel has clear warning signs at the reception and pool area, advising non-swimmers not to enter the pool.
Police Confirm Investigation
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer for Abia State Command, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the case was reported at the Ohuru Isimiri Divisional Headquarters.
“The incident scene has been visited, suspects arrested, the corpse deposited at the morgue for autopsy and preservation, and the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigations,” DSP Chinaka said.
As the investigation continues, Divine’s family and the entire Ogbo Hill community are hoping for clear answers on what caused the teenager’s death and whether any negligence was involved.
Authorities have assured the public that the matter will be handled thoroughly to bring closure to the grieving family.
