A pastor in Benin Republic has landed in hot water after a jaw-dropping scandal that has left a church community in shock. The man of God, who officiated the wedding of a married choir member in his church, is accused of having a secret affair with her for years. The affair came to light when the woman’s husband grew suspicious and ordered a DNA test, revealing a heartbreaking truth: two of their three children are not his but belong to the pastor. To make matters worse, the woman is pregnant again, and the baby is also said to be the pastor’s.
The story, which broke through a viral TikTok video, has sparked outrage across Benin Republic and beyond. According to reports, the pastor and the choir member had known each other for a long time. He stood at the altar, blessing her marriage to her husband, only to betray that sacred moment by starting an affair with her. The couple’s marriage seemed happy, producing three children, with a fourth on the way. But the husband began to notice strange behaviour and decided to dig deeper.
When he conducted the DNA test, the results were devastating. Two of the children he had raised as his own were biologically the pastor’s, and the unborn child was also linked to the clergyman. A woman narrating the story in the TikTok video said, “See the pastor, he’s sleeping with a pregnant woman in his choir. The husband caught him. The pastor has a wife and children at home.” The video showed angry church members confronting the pastor, who has reportedly been arrested by local police.
The scandal has broken the trust of many in the church. People are asking how a pastor, meant to guide and protect his flock, could do something so shameful. “This is too much,” said one church member, Mama Adjo. “We trusted him to lead us to God, but he was leading our sister astray.” Others are blaming the choir member, saying she should have respected her marriage. “Both of them are wrong,” said a local trader, Kofi Mensah. “She knew he was married, and he knew she was married. Why destroy two families?”
The pastor’s wife and children are said to be in hiding, ashamed of the public disgrace. The choir member’s husband is heartbroken, facing the pain of losing the family he thought was his. Neighbours say he has not been seen at home since the news broke, and some fear he may never recover from the betrayal. The church, once a place of worship and peace, is now divided, with some members leaving and others demanding the pastor step down.
This is not the first time a pastor has been caught in such a scandal. In 2018, a Benin-based pastor was humiliated after allegedly impregnating a married church member and forcing her to abort the baby, leading to her death. People are now calling for stricter rules to hold religious leaders accountable. “The government must step in,” said a community leader, Eze Chukwu. “These pastors are using their power to ruin lives. We need justice for the husband and his children.”
As the police investigate, the story has raised big questions. How did the affair go on for so long without anyone noticing? What will happen to the children caught in this mess? And will the church ever heal from this betrayal? For now, the people of Benin Republic are talking about little else, as this scandal shows that, truly, “problem no dey finish.”
What do you think should be done to stop such scandals in churches?
