Oko, a usually busy and peaceful student town in Anambra State, has been thrown into panic following a series of brutal killings that occurred late Thursday night, June 19, 2025.
The community is home to the Federal Polytechnic Oko, and is widely known as a major student zone, filled with young people from across Nigeria pursuing their academic dreams. But last night, fear replaced the usual hustle and bustle.
Eyewitnesses say that four people were shot dead in different parts of the town, and no one can yet explain the motive behind the killings or identify those responsible.
What makes the situation even more disturbing is the heavy presence of security forces in the area. Just at the entrance of Oko town, there's a military checkpoint at the roundabout. Not too far from there, there's also a police station along the same road. Yet, killings took place.
Earlier that day, a local security group known as Udogachi reportedly mounted a roadblock within the town. Many now wonder about the coincidence between the sudden appearance of this roadblock and the tragic killings that followed hours later.
This incident has sparked serious questions:
-
Why were four lives lost in a student-populated area despite visible security?
-
Who are the people behind these attacks?
One of the victims was captured in a photo now circulating online—slumped in a chair, lifeless. The image is heartbreaking.
This is a terrifying moment for students of Federal Polytechnic Oko, residents, and parents alike. As of now, there's no official statement from security agencies or the school management.
