Big shocker as one of the world’s most popular adult sites, Pornhub, has pulled out of France, leaving millions of fans stunned. This comes after the French government demanded that porn sites put strict age checks in place to stop children from watching adult content.
The owners of Pornhub, Aylo, said they had no choice but to suspend access because they could not risk the privacy of millions of users. They claim the government’s law would force them to collect too much personal data, which could be exposed in hacks.
France’s internet watchdog, Arcom, did not take the move lightly, saying that Pornhub is just trying to dodge its responsibility to keep children safe online. “There are plenty of tech solutions that can do the job while keeping data safe,” they said.
Interestingly, France is Pornhub’s second-biggest market after the United States, making this a big blow for both the site and its fans.
Meanwhile, French Gender Equality Minister Aurore Bergé took to X (formerly Twitter) to celebrate the decision. She said it means there will be less violent, humiliating content for children to stumble on.
Pornhub’s owner argued that it should be big tech firms like Apple and Google who handle the age checks, not adult websites like theirs. They insisted that the privacy of French citizens must come first.
Elsewhere in the world, countries like the United States and even the European Union are also cracking down on adult sites, forcing them to check users’ ages by scanning IDs or using other methods.
So, while some are celebrating the news, others are left wondering if this is a step forward or just a bigger headache for people who want their privacy protected.
Stay tuned — this drama is far from over.
