A tragic incident has struck Yardoka community in Damau District of Kaduna State, where a sand heap collapsed at a local block site, claiming the lives of eleven children and leaving seven others with varying degrees of injuries. Video
According to eyewitnesses, the children were working inside the sand pit when the walls suddenly gave way, burying them under heavy debris. Residents rushed to rescue the trapped children but were unable to save the lives of many.
The victims, all from Yardoka and nearby communities, have been named as: Muntari Abdulkadir, Aliyu Abba, Ali Umar, Mubarak Haruna, Usain Isa, Yusuf Shafiu, Mujitafa Jibril, Yusha’u Saidu, Aliyu Abdu, Hamisu Mohammed, and Ali Abdulmomini.
Seven other children — Umar Dini, Jibir Surajo, Usman Abdulmomini, Sagir Hussaini, Naziru Abdullahi, Aminu Alkasim, and Kabiru Lawal — sustained injuries and have been taken to the Primary Healthcare Centre in Yardoka for treatment.
Confirming the tragic incident, the spokesperson of the Kaduna State Police Command, DSP Mansir Hassan, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that information was received from the village head of Yardoka, Alhaji Lawal Damau, at about 1:45 p.m.
“It was to the effect that sand had caved in at a local block site, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals, with several others sustaining injuries,” he said.
DSP Hassan added that the local government and state authorities had been informed and that investigations into the incident are ongoing. He emphasised the need for improved safety measures at construction sites to prevent such heartbreaking accidents.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the deceased and those affected by this devastating tragedy,” he added.
This shocking incident has left the entire community in mourning, with many calling for stricter safety regulations to protect workers and children from similar dangers in the future.
