In a terrifying incident, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), narrowly escaped disaster when a private jet he was travelling in suffered engine failure just 15 minutes after takeoff.
The incident occurred while Wike was flying from Port Harcourt to Lagos, accompanied by two friends, on a Bombardier Global Express 5000/6000 series jet valued at ₦15 billion.
Speaking during a thanksgiving service in a church in Port Harcourt, Wike shared the chilling details of the ordeal. He recounted hearing an unusual sound shortly after boarding the plane at the Air Force base in Port Harcourt.
When he asked an air hostess about it, she initially reassured him there was no issue but later returned to confirm that one of the plane’s engines had failed at 34,000 feet. The pilots struggled to stabilise the aircraft and decided to return to Port Harcourt, as continuing to Lagos was too risky.
A viral video captured Wike’s voice during the incident, fervently praying and invoking divine intervention with phrases like, “Satan, you are a liar!” and “Blood of Jesus! Save my soul!” One of his friends, shaken by the situation, reportedly lamented, “I have not told my wife anything.”
Thankfully, the pilots safely landed the plane back in Port Harcourt, and no one was harmed. Wike expressed gratitude for their safe return, though he was unable to meet the person he had planned to see in Lagos.
The incident has sparked concern about air safety and prompted reactions on social media, with many Nigerians thanking God for Wike’s survival while others urged him to reflect on the experience.
The Rivers State Police have not commented on the incident, and no official investigation has been announced.
