While waiting for his order, a friend from university days saw him and gave him the usual “Long time, no see, you’re just spending your money” greeting. Feeling generous, he offered to pay for her food as well. She said she came with her husband and asked if he could say hello to him.
After paying for the meals, he followed her outside to where they were parked. She introduced him as a friend from school, and the husband asked, “Hope the law is paying you well? I hear hunger wan finish lawyers for this town and I saw when you came in with keke.”
The lawyer laughed, thinking it was a harmless joke. But the husband went further, advising him to work hard and save money to marry and maybe own a car one day.
He smiled and shook hands with the husband, trying hard not to laugh, even as the wife was giggling.
“I entered the keke that brought me and left,” the lawyer shared. “There was no need to prove anything or say too much. It was refreshing seeing someone give me ‘encouraging’ words like I was just starting life.”
Later, his friend apologised via WhatsApp, but he told her not to worry. The husband had clearly judged him based on how he looked that afternoon — and, to be honest, he admitted, he really did look like a kaikai man.
A simple ride to buy food turned into a funny and humbling lesson in not judging a book by its cover — or a lawyer by his ride.
