President Tinubu Declares State of Emergency in Rivers State, Suspends Governor Fubara, Deputy, and State Assembly Over Political and Security Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, citing escalating political unrest and recent security threats. 

In a nationwide address on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, the President announced the immediate suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

The President's decision follows reports of pipeline vandalism by militants in the oil-rich region, which the state government allegedly failed to address. 

Additionally, internal conflicts within the state's political structures have contributed to governance paralysis.

To ensure continued governance, President Tinubu appointed retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as the Administrator of Rivers State during this period. The judiciary will continue to function as mandated by the constitution. 

This decisive action aims to restore stability and address the pressing security and political challenges facing Rivers State.
