President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Dr. Chioma Irene Awuzie as the substantive Rector of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, Anambra State.
Her appointment comes just four days after Dr. Okeke Augustina Utonwa Genevieve was declared Acting Rector.
Dr. Awuzie’s appointment takes effect immediately for a five-year tenure, following the recommendation of the Polytechnic's Governing Council, chaired by Sen.
Dr. Barnabas Gemade. She emerged as the leading candidate after a competitive selection process.
Profile and Achievements
Before her appointment, Dr. Awuzie was a Chief Lecturer in the Department of Science Laboratory Technology (Chemistry Option) and served as Director in charge of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Projects at the Polytechnic.
Her leadership has driven significant advancements in infrastructure and institutional development across the Polytechnic’s campuses in Oko, Atani, and Ufuma.
Dr. Awuzie is an accomplished scholar with numerous research publications. She is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria, and the Institute of Corporate Administration.
She was also instrumental in drafting the Renewable Energy Technology curriculum for Nigerian Polytechnics, under the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
Leadership and Humanitarian Contributions
Dr. Awuzie has held several leadership roles, including:
Head, Department of Renewable Energy Research and Development.
Director, Petroleum, Coal, and Renewable Energy Research Unit.
Director, International Higher Education Academic Organizations.
Coordinator, Technical, Vocational Education, and Training (TVET).
She also trained at the Galilee International Management Institute (GIMI) in Israel, equipping her with global best practices in managing higher education institutions.
Beyond academics, she leads the Dr. Chioma Awuzie Foundation, which focuses on youth and women empowerment through education and skill development.
Her appointment is expected to usher in a new era of innovation and excellence at Federal Polytechnic, Oko.
