Angry youths in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State, have set a police station ablaze following the controversial death of a suspect, Tobi Bobade, in custody.
The unrest erupted after reports emerged that Bobade allegedly died due to police torture. However, the police claimed he passed away while receiving medical treatment.
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, has ordered an investigation into both Bobade’s death and the attack on the station.
“All those responsible for this criminal act will face the full weight of the law,” Afolabi stated.
According to police spokesperson Funmi Odunlami, the incident began with a dispute between two families on Ogbomo Street, Ifon, on February 15. Officers responded and made arrests, while some suspects fled.
Odunlami revealed that Bobade was brought to the station in a weak state by a man identified as Mr. Losilosi. He was rushed to a hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Following his death, a mob, allegedly led by Bobade’s father, stormed the police station, setting it on fire. The attack destroyed the administrative office, the Division Police Officer’s office, the station store, and two exhibit vehicles.
No casualties were reported, but the police have vowed to arrest those responsible for the destruction.
