Two officers from the Borno State Police Command have died after suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked the Nganzai Police Division in Borno State.
The attack happened early on Wednesday, around 12:10 a.m., according to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Daso, released on Thursday.
“At about 12:10 a.m., unknown gunmen, suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists, tried to attack Nganzai Police Division. Brave officers on duty fought back and stopped the terrorists after a gunfight,” the statement read.
During the attack, the terrorists threw hand grenades, which caused injuries to two officers. “The grenades landed on a shelter tent behind the division, fatally injuring two officers,” Daso said.
The Commissioner of Police for Borno State, Yusufu Lawal, visited the station after the attack. He praised the officers for their courage and expressed sympathy to the families of the fallen officers.
He added that explosives left behind by the attackers were recovered by the police. “Two hand grenades were recovered at the scene by the EOD-CBRN Base 13 in Maiduguri,” Daso stated. The bodies of the deceased officers were taken to the State General Hospital in Maiduguri.
The Commissioner of Police reassured the public of the police's commitment to keeping the state safe, while also honouring the officers who died protecting the community.
