Mrs. Adenike Okunlaya, the mother of 3-year-old Abayomi Michael, has shared her heartbreaking experience of how her son was physically assaulted by his teacher at Christ Mitots School, Ikorodu, Lagos.
The issue gained public attention after a viral video surfaced, showing the school teacher, Stella Nwadigo, hitting the boy because he was unable to write his numbers.
Previous Complaints Ignored
Mrs. Okunlaya, who also works at the school, revealed that this was not the first time her son had faced such treatment. She explained that Michael often came home with bruises and would complain about being beaten by "Aunty Nwadigo." Despite reporting the incidents to the school management, no meaningful action was taken.
In her words, “When I saw the video, I didn’t take any action, but whenever Michael comes home from school, he used to complain that ‘Aunty Nwadigo beat me.’ I talked to the school authorities about it, and they promised to do something about it, but yet she is still teaching in the school.”
Life as a Struggling Single Mother
Mrs. Okunlaya shared her struggles as a single mother, revealing that her husband passed away when Michael was just over a year old. Since then, she has been doing odd jobs like cleaning and washing clothes to provide for her son and ensure he gets a good education.
“His father died when Michael was a year and some months old. I did not send any teacher to beat my son; I just asked her to assist my son by monitoring his education,” she said, holding back tears.
Justice and Intervention
Although Stella Nwadigo has been remanded in Kirikiri Prison following the intervention of the Lagos State Police, Mrs. Okunlaya is pleading for justice and help from kind-hearted Nigerians. She hopes to give her son a better life despite their challenges.
“I just want justice for my son,” she said. “I am pleading for assistance so that my son can live a fulfilled life.”
