Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has denied claims that he was arrested in Abuja.
On Tuesday, some people on social media said Obi was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja.
In a statement on his social media account on Wednesday, Obi said the news was fake. He confirmed he was at his home in Onitsha, Anambra State, and called out those spreading false stories.
“I am aware of the fake news about my alleged arrest. Let me clearly say it is not true. I am currently at my home in Onitsha,” Obi said.
“This fake news about me has become a regular thing. Last year, when I was in Rwanda, they said DSS invaded my house. Now, while I am at home in Onitsha, they say I was arrested in Abuja.”
Obi added, “The people spreading these lies do not have good intentions. Let us not allow baseless rumours to distract us from the real problems we face as a country.”
The rumour of Obi’s arrest came a day after he said his life was at risk because of his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Obi made the claim after Felix Morka, the spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC), said, “Peter Obi has crossed the line so many times and has it coming to him whatever he gets.”
In his New Year message, Obi criticised the government for corruption, poverty, hardship, and growing debt. Morka called Obi’s statements “ridiculous” and accused him of having no achievements in Anambra.
