The parents of Segun Olowookere, a young man sentenced to death for allegedly stealing a fowl 14 years ago, have spoken out about their painful experience.
In an interview on *Talk to B,* hosted by actress Biola Bayo, the elderly couple shared how their son, then 17 years old, was arrested in Osun State. Despite insisting on his innocence, Segun was sentenced to death by hanging.
The parents revealed that they could not afford the N30,000 demanded by the police for bail and could only raise N20,000. Since then, all efforts to appeal the case have failed, leaving Segun on death row.
Despite his ordeal, Segun made good use of his time in prison, studying medicine and graduating as a doctor.
In an emotional plea, Segun’s mother begged Governor Ademola Adeleke to review the case and grant her son mercy. "He is innocent," she said. "Even if my life ends today, I just want my son to be free."
His father added, “Segun refused to run because he believed he did nothing wrong. But the police came, and we couldn’t stop what happened. We beg Governor Adeleke to show mercy and save his life.”
The couple hopes the governor and the public will help give their son a second chance.
