My mother slapped my wife, and my wife slapped her back.
My name is Shidebere, and I have an issue on my mind that I really need your opinions on—please, no insults. I am a teacher in one of the private schools in my area in Sheffield, while my wife works as a secretary in a big company. Her monthly salary is about four times what I earn.
We have a two-year-old daughter, and on the day of her second birthday, my wife and I decided to throw her a party. On her first birthday, we didn’t do much; we simply marked the occasion with family since I wasn’t financially buoyant enough to throw an elaborate party.
For some weeks before the party, my wife had been angry with me. When the issue reached my mom, she was furious with my wife, calling her inconsiderate and heartless. Despite this, my wife began preparations for the party without my knowledge, buying items and keeping them at her friend’s place.
A week before the birthday, she asked me, "What’s the plan for our child’s party?" I replied, "You know I haven’t been paid for two months now, and you’ve been giving me transport money for work. So, what’s on your mind?"
She handed me a list of the items needed for the party, which totaled ₦105,000. I was shocked. "Are we throwing a party for the entire community or what? Where do you expect me to get that kind of money?" I yelled at her. This argument escalated, and I ended up sharing the issue with my mom, who advised her to cut her coat according to her cloth.
Unknown to me, my wife had bought some of the party items on credit from her friend, who owns a supermarket in our area. After the party, her friend came to our house on a Sunday evening to demand her money. Coincidentally, my mom was visiting us that day.
As we were seeing my mom off, we ran into my wife’s friend at the gate. She started shouting, accusing us of avoiding her and no longer patronizing her shop, even claiming to have seen my wife buying from other stores. I was speechless but asked her to calm down so we could discuss.
Back inside the house, her friend explained the situation, and I turned to my wife to ask if it was true. To my greatest surprise, she confirmed it. In anger, my mom stood up and slapped her, and immediately, my wife slapped her back.
I was so disappointed in my wife that I threw her belongings outside and told her to leave my house without touching our child. This incident led to me filing for divorce. However, ever since then, I haven’t had peace of mind because I miss my family.
