President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to engage the country’s adversaries with increased military gallantry and sophistication, underscoring Nigeria's role as the giant of Africa. Tinubu made this call in Kaduna at the combined passing out parade of the 71st Regular Course of the Army, Navy, and Air Force at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
The event also included graduates from the Direct Short Service Course 28 (Army) and Direct Short Service Course 32 (Air Force), with a total of 823 officers being commissioned into the nation’s armed forces. Tinubu, represented by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, urged the newly commissioned officers to remain focused and professional in their duties, emphasizing that elite militaries play a vital role in democratic systems.
“We are the giant of Africa and must remain so,” Tinubu stated, expressing confidence that the nation's leadership would fulfill its responsibilities. He lamented the multitude of challenges facing Nigeria, including economic difficulties, unemployment, and insecurity, which have threatened the nation’s stability.
Despite these challenges, Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring a united, secure, and prosperous Nigeria. He noted that the government has already begun implementing policies aimed at improving living conditions for Nigerians, emphasizing the need for collective efforts from all citizens to overcome the nation's challenges.
Tinubu highlighted the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, directing military leadership to develop a comprehensive policy to support the families of soldiers who have lost their lives in service to the nation. He stressed that the government is committed to addressing the root causes of Nigeria’s problems and improving the quality of life for all citizens.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s post-independence history, which has been marked by periods of turbulence and fortune, Tinubu expressed his administration’s determination to reshape the country’s future by fostering unity and inclusivity. He charged the NDA cadets to uphold the nation’s values of loyalty, commitment, resilience, and service, reminding them that their training has been an investment by the nation and that they are expected to respond whenever called upon.
“The nation requires loyalty, commitment, dedication, resilience, and service from you. Be aware that wherever and whenever the nation comes calling, you will answer,” he added.
