A tragic event occurred on Sunday in Niger State when a petrol tanker explosion claimed the lives of 48 people. The explosion also resulted in the death of 50 cattle, causing widespread devastation.
The disaster took place along the Bida-Agaie-Lapai road, approximately two kilometers from the Dendo community in the Agaie Local Government Area.
Alhaji Abdullahi Baba-Arah, the Director-General of the Niger Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), confirmed the incident in a statement from Minna on Sunday.
According to him, the explosion happened around 12:30 am when a petrol tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) collided with a trailer truck filled with passengers and cattle. The trailer was traveling from Wudil, Kano State, to Lagos.
The accident also involved two other vehicles: a crane truck and a pickup van. As a result of the explosion, over 30 people were confirmed dead at the scene, and the fire claimed the lives of more than 50 cattle.
Baba-Arah reported that the agency's Rapid Response Team (RRT) and Local Emergency Management Committees (LGEMCs) were immediately deployed to the site.
They are still conducting search and rescue operations, as some victims remain trapped inside the wreckage of the trucks.
The community is in shock as emergency responders continue to deal with the aftermath of this unfortunate disaster.
