This is a tragic story that reveals the dire poverty and food insecurity in Nigeria. A widow and her five children had consumed spoiled cassava flour and therefore lost their lives in Kano State. The family decided to cook the flour for dinner on Saturday, being too hungry and having no other food.
As the night went by, the family started getting sick from severe cases of food poisoning which was characterized by severe stomach pains.
Their impoverished status meant that they couldn’t get timely medical help hence leading to their deaths. The poisoned resulted into death as all six family members succumbed to effects of the bad meal by morning .
The incident has caused great sorrow and emphasized how critical it is for an immediate government intervention towards tackling a global economic downturn thereby exposing many Nigerians to such incidents of loss. Islamic rites were observed during their interment which took place next day.
This sad event is a striking evidence that even poverty can cause loss of human life, while trying to remind us about ensuring safety of all citizens’ foods.
We pray for the souls of those who are gone and we demand that the government should design policies that will alleviate such deprivation.
