GOOD NEWS: A bipartisan proposal may allocate $500M to support U.S. farmers whose crops and livestock were poisoned by Per and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals," are a family of 15,000 compounds that persist in the environment and are linked to health problems in humans.
The proposal was added to the Senate’s version of the multi-billion dollar Farm Bill.
It addresses growing evidence that crops and livestock were poisoned by PFAS-contaminated sewage sludge used as fertilizer.
The funds may be used to monitor health, support state-level testing for dangerous chemicals, remediate farms, or buy out farmers affected by the contamination.
The legislation is modeled on a bill that Maine's state legislature approved unanimously.
Sludge is a combination of human and industrial waste that is generated by the wastewater treatment process.
Consumer groups warned in 2019 that food products would be contaminated by using PFAS-contaminated sludge as fertilizer
