In a remarkable event in Obudu, Cross River State, a mentally challenged woman named Ebassey Kerie Obeteng, also known as Azonto, has given birth to a set of twins. The delivery took place at Sacred Heart Hospital on Saturday, July 15, 2023, witnessed by Linus Ibli Behakong.
According to Mr. Behakong, the woman was impregnated by an unidentified man. Despite this mystery, he took it upon himself to ensure her well-being by registering her for ante-natal care and closely monitoring her progress.
"She is a mentally challenged woman from Abi LGA, and we are unaware of the person responsible for her pregnancy. I took the initiative to enroll her in the hospital's care, covered her scan expenses, and closely supervised her throughout the process. Through the power of social media, we managed to raise funds with the help of compassionate individuals. Yesterday, she successfully gave birth to twins—a boy and a girl—via Caesarean Section (CS) at Sacred Heart Hospital, Obudu," explained Linus.
Moved by the situation, kind-hearted Nigerians have begun contributing financial aid and post-natal items for the mother and her newborns. Concurrently, efforts are being made to involve the government in the welfare of the babies, while also focusing on rehabilitating the mother.
It is hoped that this story of resilience and community support will shed light on the challenges faced by mentally challenged individuals and prompt greater compassion and understanding in society.
