Video footage circulating on social media corroborates the account, showing the suspect confessing to the crime of killing the lecturer with a pestle.
According to the suspect's confession, the altercation began when the lecturer returned home and instructed the houseboy to cook rice. While preparing the meal, the houseboy was questioned about not washing the dishes. The houseboy remained silent, which further agitated the lecturer. He then slapped the houseboy, who explained that he suffered from an ear problem and people usually refrained from slapping him. This response enraged the lecturer, who continued to physically assault the houseboy with a cane.
In a fit of anger, the houseboy retaliated, leading to a violent fight between the two. It was during this struggle that the houseboy picked up a pestle from the kitchen and struck the lecturer on the head, delivering multiple blows until he collapsed.
The video also captures the lifeless body of the deceased lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by grieving relatives, friends, and hospital staff who were present to question the suspect.
Additional information suggests that while the suspect and the deceased's friends were transporting him to the hospital that night, the suspect attempted to choke him to death inside the vehicle. Observing the suspicious behavior, the others intervened and stopped him. The dying victim managed to utter the suspect's name before succumbing to his injuries.
Initially, the suspect denied any involvement in Chima's death, claiming that the deceased's girlfriend attacked him. However, he later confessed to the crime to the attending doctor at the hospital that night.
A witness at the scene alleged that the suspect, originally from Abakaliki, inflicted knife wounds on the deceased's body after rendering him unconscious. The intent was to make it appear as if the lecturer had been attacked by a third party. The suspect, however, refuted these allegations.
Efforts to obtain a statement from DSP Ikenga Tochukwu, the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, were unsuccessful at the time of this publication.
