The British government has apologized to Peter Obi, the Labor party's presidential candidate in Nigeria's last general election, for his unfair detention and questioning by immigration officers at London's Heathrow airport.
They also personally apologized and stated that the gratuitous treatment of him was "completely unacceptable".
The immigration office said: "Frankly, the behavior of the immigration officer is appalling and we apologize."
"Immigration officials mistakenly issued a warrant for his arrest to search for a person who impersonated and committed perjury, forgery and identity theft."
Prudentj2 reported that immigration officers handed Obi a detention note and told him to stand aside in the airport's protocol-required queue.
Obi was reportedly harassed and detained by immigration officials at the airport for several hours.
The spokesperson of the party's campaign council, Dylan Onifade, made this clear in a statement on Wednesday, April 12, 2023.
Onifade said the former governor of Anambra has been arrested and interrogated on several charges, indicating that someone in London must be impersonating him.
Immigration officers are said to have welcomed Obi as he arrived at London's Heathrow airport from Nigeria on Good Friday, April 7, 2023.
“Since the impostor is still on the run, Obi may be involved in a series of prohibited acts and he, his family, his party, the submissive movement, and indeed in Nigeria, are still the subject of controversy. Onifede said: This conscience of the people is left without a place.
