Do it with fear and do it uncertainly: Nigerian businessman and philanthropist Sir Tony Elumelu sends a heartfelt message to outgoing members of the National Youth Service Corp.
Around 1985.
I remember my youth service days in Sokoto, a young man, fresh out of school, enjoying the drinks we could afford (lol) and unsure of his next steps.
In my uncertainty I was sure of one thing, I would excel wherever I found myself with hard work and resilience.
I've always admired the banking profession, first of all I liked that the guys in the profession were always impeccably dressed...back then suspenders were a huge thing and I wanted to look like them.
A few years later, after my master's, I saw a graduate application with a minimum 2:1 at All States Trust Bank, which matched what I wanted for my life, but my 2:2 didn't qualify me. nevertheless, I signed up because I had determined what I wanted in life and I was going to work for it. I submitted my application and said "even if I don't meet these requirements, if you give me the chance I will prove myself". I got this job and spent every day proving and making my fortune at the bank.
Do it with fear and do it uncertainly!
This is my message to the youths out there, especially those who just passed out of NYSC yesterday. The world needs your courage.
Never give up on your dreams
