The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Kano has begun a thorough investigation into two men arrested with a staggering sum of fake \$899,800 hidden in cartons of Maggi Star seasoning.
The suspects, identified as 42-year-old Abubakar Hussaini and 53-year-old Sahabi Adamu, were intercepted by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) along Maiduguri Road in Wudil, Kano State. The pair were on their way to Kila Village in Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State when they were caught.
According to reports, the NDLEA searched the suspects’ Golf 3 Station Wagon and discovered the counterfeit notes tucked away inside a carton of Maggi Star seasoning—a shocking and clever hiding place that left many surprised.
The suspects allegedly planned to deliver the fake money to a man named Muhammad Walo in Kila Village. Walo was expected to connect them with Mallam Mashiru, who is believed to be a spiritualist with supposed powers to "transform" counterfeit money into real cash through ritual prayers.
The EFCC, which has now taken over the case, confirmed that the suspects will be charged in court as soon as investigations are completed.
A top EFCC official who spoke on the matter said, “We are determined to get to the root of this matter and ensure that those involved face the full weight of the law. Counterfeit currency is a serious crime that undermines our economy and security.”
