My name is Nikki, and I’m 24 years old. For over three months, I’ve been squatting with a friend because I can’t afford an apartment yet. I’ve known my friend, Tinu, since we were kids—we both attended the same secondary school. Unlike her, I’m more of an introvert and don’t enjoy social gatherings.
One day, Tinu invited me to a house party at an apartment on the island. Initially, I declined, saying I wasn’t interested and giving various excuses, but she managed to convince me. “It’s been weeks since you’ve had any fun,” she said. “Maybe a little party won’t hurt.” Against my better judgment, I agreed. If only I knew what awaited me.
When the day arrived, Tinu and I got dressed and called an Uber to take us to the party. At the gate, she showed the security man a pass on her phone, and we were let in. As we approached the apartment entrance, I felt a wave of nervousness and thought about going back. But I was already there.
The Uber dropped us off, and Tinu made a call. A few minutes later, a guy came out to walk us in. He greeted us warmly, giving Tinu a side hug. She introduced me briefly, and I couldn’t help but notice the way they interacted—it seemed like they were close.
Inside, the music was blasting, the air was thick with the smell of weed and shisha, and the room was crowded. I felt out of place but reminded myself that Tinu was here. She soon handed me a drink. Being a light drinker, I only sipped a little. The alcohol tasted horrible, but I forced it down to avoid looking out of place.
As the night went on, everyone seemed to be having fun, including Tinu. I decided to loosen up and started moving my body to the music. At one point, Tinu handed me a pill, insisting it would "lighten my mood." I hesitated, but her words, “We’re here to party, not for Sunday service,” echoed in my head. I reluctantly took the pill, washing it down with alcohol.
Moments later, my body felt different—light, euphoric, and unusually energetic. Everything around me seemed vibrant and alive. A handsome guy approached me, introducing himself as Raymond, or "Ray" for short. We hit it off quickly, and his sweet scent and charming smile made me feel butterflies in my stomach.
Ray suggested we move to a quieter place to talk, and without thinking, I agreed. He led me to a room, explaining he owned the apartment. I was hesitant at first but felt reassured by his friendly demeanor. The room was small but cozy, with bundles of cash scattered on the bed.
We talked for hours, and I found myself opening up to him. He seemed attentive, although he occasionally glanced at his phone. At one point, he left to get me water, saying I needed to rest. That was the last time I saw him that night.
