A deeply heartbreaking true-life story has emerged online after a young woman narrated how the man she married ruined her life financially, emotionally and medically, despite all the sacrifices she made to build him up from nothing. Her story, which has gone viral, has sparked nationwide conversation about deception in marriages, domestic suffering, and the dangers of ignoring red flags in the name of love.
According to her account, she met the man at a friend’s wedding and fell in love instantly. Coming from a wealthy family, she hid his financial struggles from her parents and lied that he had a good job. When he proposed, she supported the entire traditional marriage process using her personal savings of N5 million. She gave him the money to make her family believe he was financially capable. After the wedding, she used the remaining funds to help complete his family’s uncompleted house in the village.
The couple relocated to Port Harcourt where he lived, but she was shocked to find herself in a one-room “face me I face you” apartment with no furniture. Out of love and shame, she used the money sent by her brothers to buy basic items for their home. When she asked about his plans for their future, he claimed he only needed N3 million to start a phone business. She gave him the last N2.5 million from her account without hesitation.
Months later, she became pregnant but the suffering only worsened. He refused to give her money to register for antenatal care, claiming he had no money despite receiving millions from her. She hid her pain from her parents because she did not want them to know she had lied to them before the marriage. She carried the pregnancy without proper medical care and delivered a baby boy who developed jaundice from untreated malaria.
Her situation became worse three months after childbirth when her entire body began to swell. Her husband refused to take her to the hospital, and she finally broke down, calling her mother to confess everything. Her parents rushed her to a teaching hospital in Enugu where doctors discovered she had developed Hepatitis due to untreated malaria. The disease had already damaged her liver. She remained hospitalized for six months while her husband completely abandoned her. Her parents paid almost the entire bill of N3.5 million, while her husband refused to contribute even N500,000.
She tragically lost her newborn baby in the hospital as a result of the untreated conditions she suffered throughout pregnancy.
Months later, her husband returned with his family to beg. Out of pressure and misplaced hope, she reconciled with him. Even though she was still managing her damaged liver, she got pregnant again. Her family offered to give her N8 million to start a business so she could be stable, but she begged them to use the money to send her husband abroad so he could “succeed and take care of the family.” They agreed, and in 2024 he traveled to India.
But instead of supporting his family, he gave his ATM card to his sister, transferred his landed property to her, abandoned his wife and continued life alone abroad. Her brother later discovered that her husband was earning about N15 million monthly from an illegal business in India. He never sent money home, forcing her to rely on her family for feeding, rent and school fees.
Unknown to her, he had bought land and houses in Lagos through his sisters. This year, he told her he was no longer interested in the marriage because he had found a South African woman. He blocked her and instructed her not to call again. Heartbroken, she left his house and returned to her parents, who had always warned her about the second marriage.
Out of despair, she went to her village deity to cry out for justice. Two weeks later, the South African woman he was dating reported him to the police over his business dealings. He was arrested, and everything he bought in Nigeria was sold to bail him out. He was eventually deported and has now returned to Nigeria, begging again with his family.
The woman, who is still battling severe liver damage and uncertainty about her future, says she is confused about what to do next. Her brothers currently pay for expensive drugs that keep her alive. She describes herself as broken, ashamed and unsure whether she will even live long enough to recover from the years of emotional, financial and medical devastation.
Her story has touched thousands across social media, drawing reactions ranging from sympathy to anger. Many Nigerians are calling it a painful reminder of how blind love, shame, and pressure can push people into tragic situations.
The woman ended her story with the painful question: “What am I supposed to do now?”
Her experience continues to spark conversations on social media about marriage, abuse, manipulation and the need for women to protect their emotional and financial wellbeing.
