The death of Brigadier-General Uba is more than a tragic headline — it is a painful reminder of the unending risks our soldiers face every day in the North-East. His loss has shocked many Nigerians, not only because of his rank, but because of the disturbing circumstances surrounding the incident. One of the biggest questions people are asking is how ISWAP was able to locate him so quickly. Did they intercept his communication? Did someone leak his position? Or is this simply another example of how insurgent groups have mastered the terrain?
The truth is that location compromise in a conflict zone does not depend on one single factor. Insurgents in the region rely on a mix of spotters, local informants, and basic signal-tracking tools. They understand the bush, the roads, and the movement patterns better than anyone. A high-value target who becomes isolated — even for a short time — can easily be detected. This is the harsh reality of asymmetric warfare.
But beyond the technical explanations lies a deeper lesson: ISWAP and other insurgent groups thrive on speed, surprise, and local intelligence networks. Even when our troops share coordinates with friendly forces, the enemy sometimes arrives first simply because they are already closer, already watching, and already prepared to strike. It is not always sabotage. It is the brutality and unpredictability of a battlefield where the rules keep changing.
This incident should push the military leadership to examine, urgently and honestly, the communication, extraction, and escort procedures meant to protect senior officers. No soldier — no matter their rank — should ever be left vulnerable after an ambush. Nigeria cannot afford to lose brave men due to avoidable gaps in protocol.
Brigadier-General Uba’s death is a national tragedy. It should not end as just another story of loss. It must mark the beginning of deeper reforms, stronger protection strategies, and better support for the troops who lay down their lives for our safety every day.
May his soul rest in peace. And may this painful moment lead us toward a safer, more vigilant military system.
