A woman in Abuja has lost her unborn twins after trekking on the road while in labour because she could not afford the ₦28,000 delivery fee requested at her health centre. Read Our Last Post: 7 Silent Time-Wasters That Keep You Poor – And Why Wealthy People Never Fall For Them
Eyewitnesses said she was spotted by a Good Samaritan, who saw her struggling and crying for help while walking in pain. When approached, the woman explained that she was asked to pay ₦28,000 and also bring a referral letter before she could be attended to. She said she did not have the money, no baby items, and her husband was sick at home.
The Good Samaritan quickly rushed her back to the health centre where nurses discovered she was already in active labour. Sadly, despite efforts to save the babies, the twins did not survive.
This painful story has sparked outrage across Nigeria. Many people are angry at a healthcare system where a mother has to beg or trek while in labour because of money. Citizens are demanding affordable maternal care so that no other woman will lose her child just because she cannot pay hospital bills.
The financial lesson here is clear. In Nigeria today, the poor are punished twice – first by poverty, and second by a system that puts price tags on survival. Many families cannot save because daily living expenses consume everything, and when emergencies like childbirth come, they are left helpless.
Until healthcare becomes affordable and insurance is accessible to ordinary people, stories like this will continue to break our hearts. The twins are gone, but the questions remain: how many more mothers must suffer before change comes?
