A heartbreaking incident has left many Nigerians angry and emotional, as a hardworking tricycle (Keke) rider identified as Ahmadu now lies unconscious in a hospital bed after being allegedly brutalised by officers of the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps in Jos, Plateau State.
According to eyewitness reports, the tragic incident began at Bayan Banki Terminus, where an officer allegedly confronted Ahmadu over wrong parking. Things took a dark turn when the officer reportedly entered Ahmadu’s tricycle and began dragging him to an unknown destination. The dragging reportedly continued all the way to the Nassarawa area, where the officer called for backup.
Ahmadu was then forcefully taken to their office in the Abbatoir area. It was there, according to sources, that he was mercilessly beaten to a state of stupor by multiple Civil Defence officers. The beating was so severe that he eventually lost consciousness and was rushed to Jan Kwano Hospital, where he is currently battling for his life.
A disturbing photo from the hospital shows Ahmadu lying unconscious, a urine bag by his side, as he receives treatment. Nigerians on social media have expressed deep sorrow and outrage over what many are calling “a clear case of brutality against the poor.”
One user wrote: “Is this the price of being poor in Nigeria? That a man trying to feed his family can be beaten like an animal by those meant to protect us?”
Another added: “It could be my brother. It could be your father. This is not just Ahmadu’s pain — it is our pain.”
This tragic case comes at a time when ordinary Nigerians continue to suffer untold hardship — from the rising cost of food and fuel to insecurity and now, unchecked abuse of power by security personnel.
For many, this is more than just about Ahmadu. It is about how the system has failed those who do menial jobs to survive. A man who drives a Keke to feed himself and his family has been reduced to a hospital patient — unconscious, helpless, and silent.
Who will speak for Ahmadu? Who will hold these officers accountable?
As Nigerians continue to pray for his recovery, many are calling on the government and the Civil Defence Corps to urgently investigate the matter, identify those responsible, and ensure justice is done.
Because if this can happen to Ahmadu, it can happen to any one of us.
