A tragic and horrifying incident, unknown gunmen stormed a community meeting in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, on Monday evening, June 30, 2025, killing at least 10 people and injuring 9 others. According to Augustine Odom, chairman of the Ebonyi community in Ogboji, the assailants arrived in two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) during the community’s regular monthly meeting, which began at 4:00 p.m. The attackers, described as unprovoked, demanded the group’s minutes book before opening fire on the participants. “It was a peaceful meeting discussing welfare issues,” Odom recounted, describing the attack as sudden and brutal. Only one person reportedly escaped with a bullet injury, while others were not so fortunate.
The Anambra State Police Command, through spokesperson SP Tochukwu Ikenga, condemned the attack, confirming 10 deaths and 9 injuries. “The armed criminals attacked the gathering unprovoked, shooting sporadically. The victims were rushed to the hospital, but regrettably, 10 people were confirmed dead, and their bodies have been deposited in the morgue,” Ikenga stated. A police-led security team has taken control of the scene and is working to apprehend the perpetrators.
Chigozie Nweke, President of the Association of Non-Indigenes in Anambra State (ANIAS), described the incident as a “dastardly act” and called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo and Police Commissioner Ikioye Orutugu to deploy all resources to investigate and bring the culprits to justice. “This tragedy has left the Ebonyi community in deep sorrow,” Nweke said, urging swift action to ensure security for residents.
While some reports, including posts on X, claim up to 13 deaths, police have maintained the figure of 10. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, with speculations ranging from enforcement of a sit-at-home order to internal disputes within the group. A video circulating online showed a grim scene with several bodies on the ground, amplifying the community’s shock and grief.
