Kyiv, Ukraine – A devastating Russian drone attack on the northern Ukrainian city of Pryluky killed at least five people, including a one-year-old child, and wounded six others overnight, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus said on Thursday, June 5, 2025.
The strike, which hit residential areas, came just hours after a phone call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, raising questions about the timing.
According to Chaus, six Shahed-type drones struck Pryluky early Thursday, causing severe damage to homes. The city, about 100 kilometres east of Kyiv, is far from the front line and has no known military targets, making the attack particularly shocking. Among the victims were a one-year-old child, his mother, and grandmother, with the child’s mother identified as Daryna Shyhyda, a police officer, Ukraine’s National Police said.
Hours later, another Russian drone strike hit Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, wounding 17 people, including children, a pregnant woman, and a 93-year-old woman, according to regional head Oleh Syniehubov. The attack, around 1:05 am, targeted two apartment buildings in the Slobidskyi district, sparking fires and destroying vehicles. Syniehubov called it an act of “insidious terror” aimed at civilians sleeping in their homes.
The Ukrainian military responded, reporting that it struck Russian missile systems in Russia’s Bryansk region, which were allegedly preparing to attack Ukraine, possibly targeting Kyiv. “One Russian missile launcher detonated, and two others were most likely damaged,” Ukraine’s general staff said on Telegram.
The strikes follow a phone call on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, where Trump said Putin “very strongly” vowed to retaliate for Ukraine’s weekend drone attacks on Russian airfields, which damaged or destroyed 41 Russian warplanes.
The call, lasting over an hour, has sparked debate, with some on social media accusing Trump of indirectly endorsing Russia’s actions, though no evidence confirms this.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, noting that Russia launched 103 drones and one ballistic missile across regions like Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro, and Kherson overnight. “This is another massive strike,” he said, highlighting the ongoing civilian toll.
As the war continues, with peace talks in Istanbul showing little progress, the latest attacks have intensified calls for stronger action against Russia. One X user wrote, “Pressure on Russia is a real strength and humanity to stop the killings.”
The tragedy in Pryluky, where a Ukrainian firefighter lost his wife, daughter, and grandson, has left many in mourning and fuelled anger over Russia’s tactics.
