It is with a heavy heart that Governor Hyacinth Alia confirmed the tragic killing of 23 innocent people in Benue State over the past days.
Twelve victims were reported dead in Apa Local Government Area, while another eleven were slain in Gwer West, following brutal and unprovoked attacks by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
Governor Alia, speaking from Government House, condemned the bloodshed in the strongest terms, labelling the killings “unacceptable.” Addressing the press shortly after an emergency security council meeting convened on Tuesday morning, he assured Benue residents that he would not stand by and watch communities turned into killing fields.
“These killings are unacceptable, and as your Governor, I will not sit idle while our communities are turned into killing fields,” Governor Alia declared.
To curb the violence and restore calm, the Governor announced that joint security forces had been deployed to the affected areas and beyond. Their directive is clear: halt the violence, sweep the communities for threats, and ensure the restoration of peace and stability.
Governor Alia expressed deep sympathy to the grieving families and displaced residents, assuring them of the government’s unwavering support. He pledged that every available resource would be mobilised to protect lives and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“This government stands firmly with every grieving family and displaced resident,” he said. “We are mobilising every available resource to protect lives and bring those responsible for these heinous acts to justice.”
He urged all citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate fully with security operatives to facilitate their mission of restoring peace and order.
The Governor promised to keep the public updated on the progress of the security operations as efforts to apprehend the killers intensify.
