A proud Nigerian father has shared how he’s teaching his young daughter, Olaedo, important life skills—including how to use his ATM cards to withdraw cash whenever needed.
According to him, each of his ATM cards has a different password, but whenever they’re out shopping, he simply tells her the one they’re using, and she handles the withdrawal herself.
The father said he learned this habit from his own mum, who didn’t joke with him when it came to teaching him responsibility. “I was literally her handbag growing up,” he said. “She taught me how to fill a bank teller and withdraw money at the bank as early as 2000.”
Beyond banking, his mum also taught him how to cook, and she shaped his business sense by sending him to buy and resell items from Ogbete Main Market.
These early lessons, he said, made him the responsible man he is today—and even impressed his wife, who noticed his homely skills right from the start.
He’s now passing these lessons on to Olaedo. “She can power on a laptop and shut it down properly,” he said proudly. “It’s basic—but it’s a foundation.”
He encouraged other parents to follow his example: “Start now. Teach your kids what will shape their future. Stop over-pampering them. Teach them the basics so they can handle themselves anywhere life takes them.”
He also advised parents to teach boys how to cook and girls how to handle what are often considered ‘boys’ tasks. “Balance it. Let them grow up complete,” he added.
“Don’t raise liabilities. Teach them life.”
