A very heartbreaking and disturbing incident has just come to light in Benin City. The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man named Joshua Osaigbovo. He is 31 years old. According to the police, he is responsible for the death of a 21-year-old young woman called Osato Festus Edogiaweria. Her body was found buried in a shallow grave, not far from the house of the suspect.
The sad truth is that Osato was declared missing since April 25, 2025. Her mother, Mrs. Ojo, had gone to the police at Aduwawa Police Station to report that her daughter had left the house five days before and did not return. The case was later moved to the State Criminal Investigations Department for a deeper investigation.
It was from there that the Family Unit of the police, after serious follow-up and information gathering, arrested the suspect, Joshua Osaigbovo, on June 18. The arrest took place in Iyanomon, a community under Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area.
The police spokesperson, CSP Moses Yamu, said that when the suspect was questioned, he confessed. According to him, he had invited Osato to his house on April 27, 2025. But something went wrong. They got into a fight, and during the fight, Osato reportedly fell and hit her head on the ground. She died on the spot.
What followed was shocking. Instead of calling the police or seeking help, he decided to cover it up. He carried her body with a wheelbarrow and took her into the bush behind his house. There, he dug a shallow grave and buried her quietly, thinking no one would find out.
But the police did not stop searching. On June 20, just two days after his arrest, the suspect led the police to the exact place where he buried Osato. The body was carefully exhumed, and her phone was also found with the suspect.
The police have promised to charge him to court once their investigation is fully complete. This case has caused pain and anger across Benin City. Many people are asking how someone could go this far to hide such a serious crime.
Osato was a young girl with her whole life ahead of her. Now, her life has been cut short in the most painful way. Her family, friends, and loved ones are left with tears and shock. A mother is mourning her daughter, and a community is asking questions.
The police are now warning people to always speak up when they notice something strange. Nobody expected such evil to be happening right inside their neighbourhood.
