Vera Anyim, a policewoman from Ebonyi State, is in tears again, claiming Pastor Paul Enenche of Dunamis International Gospel Centre in Abuja has abandoned her after a humiliating incident that cost her a police rank. Anyim says she was demoted from Inspector to Sergeant after testifying in Enenche’s church, and now the pastor no longer takes her calls or offers her any support.
The trouble began in April 2024, when Anyim took to the pulpit during a Sunday service to share her joy of graduating with a law degree from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), becoming the first in her family to do so. She mistakenly called her degree a “BSc in Law” instead of LLB, prompting Pastor Enenche to interrupt and accuse her of lying in front of the congregation. He questioned her English, saying she didn’t sound like a law graduate, and asked her to leave the altar, warning others against giving false testimonies. The moment went viral, sparking outrage online as Nigerians called for an apology.
Proof soon emerged that Anyim was indeed a graduate, with her name listed as number 2262 on NOUN’s convocation list for April 13, 2024, confirming her LLB degree. Photos of her in police uniform with the late Nollywood actor John Okafor also surfaced, showing her as an Inspector. Facing backlash, Enenche issued an apology through his assistant, Sylvester Edoh, saying he never meant to embarrass her and had reached out privately. Anyim met with Enenche and his wife, Becky, posting on Facebook that she held no grudges and remained a committed Dunamis member.
But now, Anyim claims the apology was not enough. She alleges the public humiliation led to her demotion in the Nigerian Police Force, bringing her pain and shame. “Pastor Paul Enenche no longer picks my calls,” she cried out. “His embarrassment brought pain and shame to me. Till today, he didn’t give me any money and doesn’t want to see me again.” She believes her testimony, meant to glorify God, instead triggered a chain of events that cost her dearly.
The claim of demotion could not be independently verified, as no official police statement has confirmed it. However, Anyim’s distress has reignited debates about the incident, with some Nigerians slamming Enenche for not doing more to support her. Others question whether her demotion, if true, is directly linked to the church incident or other professional issues.
What do you think? Should Pastor Enenche do more to help Vera Anyim, or is this a matter for the police to address?
