A heartbreaking image has emerged from Benue State, showing a man on a motorcycle transporting the lifeless body of his brother — the latest victim of suspected Fulani herdsmen, who allegedly attacked the Edikwu Ankpali community in Apa Local Government Area.
The slain man is believed to have been targeted in a violent assault that has left local residents reeling. Witnesses say the attack was unprovoked and part of an ongoing wave of violence against innocent communities in Benue State.
Residents of Edikwu Ankpali community described how heavily armed attackers invaded their village without warning, killing, burning, and destroying property in the process. “They left their home and came to launch attacks against the people of Benue unprovoked,” one resident lamented.
“This is genocide,” he added, pointing to a history of repeated attacks by suspected killer herdsmen in the region. “Benue people are not cowards. We only have an unfair system that allows the aggressors to carry arms while the victims remain defenceless.”
Community leaders and human rights advocates have repeatedly called attention to what they describe as systemic failures. “Sadly, this has been happening for too long,” one local leader said. “Every time politicians need to use insecurity as a political weapon to push for a change of government, Benue people are the victims.”
The state government has yet to issue an official statement on this latest incident, but locals are calling for urgent intervention from both state and federal authorities to address the persistent attacks.
Many in Benue say they can no longer bear the burden of insecurity. “We are tired of being slaughtered like animals,” said another resident who asked to remain anonymous. “Our people deserve protection and justice, not empty promises.”
As the man on the motorcycle rode through the village, clutching his brother’s lifeless body, his sorrow mirrored the pain of an entire community struggling under the weight of unending violence.
