Nairobi, Kenya – President William Ruto had everyone laughing at a recent wedding when he playfully teased about Nigerian men marrying Kenyan women. “My daughter is married to a Nigerian, and this one now is married to a Nigerian. Are our guys slow? I don’t know. We need to balance this scale,” he said, sparking chuckles from the crowd.
Speaking at the private wedding ceremony on Madaraka Day, June 2, 2025, Ruto jokingly called Nigerians “complicated” but praised their good behaviour at the event. His light-hearted comments come from a personal place—his daughter, June Ruto, is married to Dr. Alexander Ezenagu, a Nigerian lecturer. The president’s remarks were not meant to offend but to share a fun moment, especially since he’s connected to Nigerians through family.
The wedding guests, including Nigerians, enjoyed the banter, with Ruto adding, “I wanted to see these Nigerians who have come to harass my friend!” He also checked if the guests had “done the needful,” keeping the mood cheerful.
Ruto’s comments have gone viral, with Kenyans and Nigerians reacting online. Some Kenyans jokingly agreed, saying their men need to “step up,” while others saw it as a call for stronger ties between the two nations. One social media user wrote, “Nigerian men are sharp o! Kenyan guys, wake up!” Another said, “Let’s build more love between Kenya and Nigeria.”
This isn’t the first time Ruto has spoken about his daughter’s marriage. Back in 2021, he admitted he’d have preferred June to marry a Kenyan but accepted it as “God’s plan.” He even teased about a Kenyan suitor named Ochieng who “lost” to Ezenagu.
The president’s playful remarks have sparked laughter and friendly online debates, with many saying it’s all in good fun. As Ruto put it, maybe it’s time to “balance the scale” with more Kenyan-Nigerian love stories—perhaps with Kenyan men marrying Nigerian women too
