The Federal Government has cancelled the traditional military parade usually held to mark Democracy Day celebrations, shifting the focus to a series of national events scheduled for Thursday, 12 June 2025.
In a statement by the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will deliver a nationwide broadcast at 7:00 am to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule. The announcement follows the government’s decision to prioritise dialogue on the state of the nation over the annual military display.0
At noon, the President will address a special joint session of the National Assembly, where he is expected to discuss national unity, Nigeria’s democratic progress, and the importance of enduring reforms.
A public lecture, themed “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms”, is scheduled for 4:00 pm at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, featuring top government officials, political leaders, and civil society representatives.
The Inter-Ministerial Committee emphasised that the new programme aims to foster national dialogue and strengthen democratic institutions. It called on Nigerians to tune in to the President’s broadcast and participate in discussions on the country’s democratic journey.
Nigerians are encouraged to reflect on the progress achieved over the past 26 years and the work still needed to achieve a fully inclusive and accountable democratic system.
