A terrible tragedy has struck Ahmedabad, India, today, 12 June 2025. An Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, carrying 242 people, crashed into a medical college hostel just five minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The flight, AI171, was heading to London’s Gatwick Airport but went down in the Meghani Nagar area, causing massive destruction.
The plane slammed into a hostel where doctors and medical students live, sparking a huge fire. Thick black smoke filled the sky, and videos from the scene show charred wreckage and debris scattered everywhere. Emergency teams, including firefighters, police, and the National Disaster Response Force, rushed to the site to rescue survivors and put out the blaze. Ambulances have been taking the injured to nearby hospitals.
Sadly, police fear there may be no survivors from the plane. They also say some people on the ground, including medical students, have died, and many others are injured. One mother, Ramila, told news agency ANI that her son, a student, jumped from the second floor of the hostel to escape and was hurt but alive.
The flight had 169 Indian passengers, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Among them were 217 adults, 11 children, and two infants. The pilot made a “mayday” call just seconds after takeoff, but then the plane lost contact with air traffic control.
Air India has set up a hotline (1800 5691 444) for families seeking information. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called the crash “heartbreaking beyond words” and said he’s working with authorities to help those affected. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also shared his sadness, saying the scenes are “devastating.”
This is the first time a Boeing 787 Dreamliner has crashed since it was introduced in 2009. Boeing said they are looking into what happened. The crash has shocked everyone, and investigations are already starting to find out why this tragedy occurred.
