Skype Shuts Down After Two Decades
Microsoft is closing down Skype, a service that many people used to talk and see each other over the internet. For a long time, Skype helped friends and family speak without cost.
Now, Microsoft has decided to stop Skype in May. Users can use the same log-in details on the free version of Microsoft Teams in the coming days.
Microsoft bought Skype many years ago for a large sum of money. The company used Skype with other products such as Office and its mobile phone services.
Skype started in 2003 in Estonia and became popular because it let people call for free. In 2005, eBay bought the service, and later sold its share before Microsoft made the purchase.
Over time, other services like Zoom, Google Meet, FaceTime, and WhatsApp have become popular. Microsoft is now putting more effort into Teams, which offers similar ways to talk and meet online.
Jeff Teper from Microsoft said that Skype helped shape the way people communicate and that he was excited for the new chance with Teams.
This change marks the end of a long era for Skype. Many people remember Skype as a tool that brought them closer to loved ones. The company hopes that the move to Microsoft Teams will bring new ways to stay connected.
