A South African man, Jerome Windvogel, has been sentenced to life in prison for brutally murdering his ex-girlfriend, Nelnisha Kortjie. The Worcester Regional Court in Western Cape found him guilty of the crime.
Windvogel, a known member of the 28s gang, had a long history of violent crimes between 2006 and 2018. On 17 February 2023, he attacked Kortjie after she ignored his messages. She was walking to the bus stop in Bonnievale when he called her. When she did not respond, he chased her, pulled out a knife, and stabbed her repeatedly in the face, neck, body, arms, and legs.
Kortjie’s mother tried to stop the attack, but Windvogel threatened her. He then sat on Kortjie and continued stabbing her. She died at the scene.
Community members later caught him, and police arrested him the same morning.
During the trial, prosecutor Elton Willmse revealed that this was Windvogel’s fifth violent offence. He committed the murder while still under a suspended sentence for another crime. The court found him guilty and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
