In a shocking incident, a Zambian policeman, Detective Inspector Titus Phiri, reportedly freed 13 prisoners from Leonard Cheelo Police Station in Lusaka on New Year’s Eve. The officer, who was allegedly drunk at the time, told the inmates to go and celebrate the New Year.
According to reports, Mr Phiri took the cell keys from Constable Serah Banda and unlocked both the male and female cells. He released 13 out of 15 prisoners, some of whom had been convicted of serious crimes such as assault, robbery, and burglary.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the incident, saying, “Detective Inspector Phiri, in a state of intoxication, opened the cells and told the suspects they were free to cross over into the New Year.” Following this, Mr Phiri fled the scene.
A manhunt has been launched for the escaped prisoners, while Mr Phiri has been arrested for questioning. The authorities are now working to recapture the suspects who remain on the run.
